Introduction To Chimney Cleaning

Annual NH Chimney Inspections

What Is An Annual Chimney Inspection?

An annual chimney inspection is defined in the NFPA 211 as being an inspection where all readily accessible portions of the chimney are inspected. By readily accessible, they mean that everything that can be seen with the naked eye, and without the use of tools shall be inspected during an annual chimney inspection. "Tools" actually even include a ladder. So, by the NFPA 211 standard, we are actually not even required to get onto your roof during an annual chimney inspection.

We here at Anything Chimney found this to be... weird. We do not feel that a full chimney inspection can be conducted without at least getting on the roof and going into the basement when applicable. For that reason, we define our annual chimney inspections a bit differently than the minimum national chimney inspection standard. At Anything Chimney, we will use tools, including a ladder during an annual chimney inspection. We will even run a camera up the chimney if we see something that looks out of place or unsafe. We do not, however, open up walls, or check clearances that are in anyway hidden. We do not cause any form of destruction to the home over the course of a level one inspection. Causing any kind of intentional damage to the home for the purpose of a chimney inspection is referred to as a level three chimney inspection which will be covered more thoroughly in a later section on this page. We do, however, inspect everything that is accessible with the use of basic tools, a ladder, and a camera when necessary.

What Exactly Is Inspected During An Annual Chimney Inspection?

When conducting an annual chimney inspection, our first and primary goal is to make sure that the chimney appears safe to use. In order to give our professional opinion that a chimney is safe to use, we inspect a multitude of things. The first being clearances. We need to make sure that your fireplace, wood stove, or pellet stove is far enough away from all combustible materials. Once we have verified that all visible, applicable clearances are met, we will then inspect the condition of the flue. During an annual chimney inspection this is done with the naked eye after the flue is cleaned. If possible, we will inspect the condition of the chimney flue from both the bottom and the top of the chimney. If there are any significant problems with the chimney flue, we will notate them and write up a repair estimate to fix the safety issues within the chimney flue.

Once the clearances have been checked and the condition of the flue has been verified, we will inspect the top of the chimney for any potential water entry points or masonry issues. If we notice any water entry points that could cause a chimney leak, we write up an estimate to repair the water entry point. We will also always provide a quote for a chimney cap if there is not a chimney cap already installed.

Why Should An Annual Chimney Inspection Take Place in NH?

An annual chimney inspection should take place in NH because a chimney requires maintenance just like every other part of your home. ( Chimneys in NH actually require much more maintenance than in many other states because of the wide range of weather we experience. ) And unfortunately, chimneys seem to be one of the most neglected parts of the home. A chimney that is neglected and not kept up with can be the cause of significant repair bills down the line. Waiting until a brick has fallen off the chimney will almost ensure a very hefty repair bill, yet that is when many people think to call! The bottom line is, keeping up with basic chimney maintenance will save you thousands of dollars down the line, and it will help to keep you safe from the dangers of chimney related carbon monoxide leaks, as well as the devastating effects of a severe, preventable chimney fire.

What is a Level 2 Chimney Inspection?

A level 2 chimney inspection is defined in the NFPA 211 as being a chimney inspection where all accessible parts of the chimney shall be inspected thoroughly. Accessible, in this case is defined as all that can be seen and inspected without needing to cause damage to the home. If some kind of demolition related damage needs to be caused in order to properly inspect the chimney, fireplace, or appliance venting into the chimney, that is referred to as a level three inspection.

When Should A Level 2 Inspection Take Place In NH?

A level 2 chimney inspection should take place in NH whenever a home with a chimney is bought or sold. A level 2 chimney inspection should also take place if any kind of natural disaster takes place that could have damaged the chimney. Another reason that a level 2 chimney inspection should take place is if a new appliance is being installed into the chimney. The keyword when it comes to level 2 chimney inspections is "change." If something is changing in regards to the chimney, ( new owner, new appliance, etc. ) a level 2 chimney inspection should be completed.

What Is Inspected During A Level Two Chimney Inspection?

During a level 2 chimney inspection everything that does not require demolition must be inspected. This includes all visible clearances,  inspecting the condition of the chimney in the basement, inspecting the condition of the chimney in the attic, thoroughly inspecting the condition of the flue using a camera specifically designed for such use, and inspecting the chimney above the roof line. During this inspection we are looking for any water penetration points into the home or chimney, and any potential safety hazards in regards to the chimney and all flues within the chimney.
